Mark Richard: ‘Learn to hit the ball over the fence’

Just heard a great quote from author Mark Richard, who’s being interviewed by Diane Rehm on NPR now. I’d never heard of Richard before, but he’s a fascinating talker. He was born with deformed hips and spent much of his childhood in crutches. He tells the story of going to a baseball game in gym class in his hometown in Virginia and sitting down on the bleachers. The gym teacher asks, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“We’ll I’m obviously going to sit out and watch the game.”
“No you’re not. You’re going to play.”
“But I can’t run around the bases.”
“You don’t need to run around the bases,” said the teacher. “You just need to learn to hit the ball over the fence, and then you can walk around the bases.”
